Gobody model/rendering

Just finished this model for Patrcick Ortman. Patrick was great to work with and I think the render turned out pretty nice.
The drink should have it's website up sometime next week. Check to see if it's live gobody!

halloween

Here are a few
This was from Halloween... Of last year. Done originally as an illustration for postersetc. This isn't the finished version so you don't textures on anything. The idea was to place posters on the tombstones.

And this is a recent one trying to paint coquina:

buff02

Something I worked on in my spare time today. Zbrush is known for it's great sculpting but today... I really wanted to play with texturing. Nothing too complicated just used some old scans of drawings where I used india ink and guache. It's a slow buildup but I really dug it.

past01

My desktop background. I like it, seems familiar for some reason. Maybe because I took the photos whilst flying to vegas for NAB a few years back. I think I was at discreet/autodesk at the time. Anyway I'm doing some clean up and the image was lying around so thought I"d post it.

Here are some other things I found.
This one? Don't ask it's really weird methinks but all part of the process. In fact it's one of the things have tremendous appreciation for... The process. Results are important it's just the process isn't linear. It's a great place to be.
I didn't pay attention to anything but shapes that started from ink and guache. Scanned them and this is what I ended up with.

I don't recall much of the history of this except I started painting and came up with this.

paint05

Been working in 3d a lot and it seems any time I do that my posts are less frequent.
Maybe I'm a little more discerning? Details will soon follow. It's not quite finished (far from it actually) but it was nice to paint again today.

bloggin it

a few things from today. Just having some fun exploring some ideas. The 2d side has been lacking lately so I tried to make up for it... and a rough buffalo creature guy.

a quick painting...

an even quicker painting...

a buffalo of sorts.

having fun in painter photoshop and maya. Sure I'm on hiatus but my goal still stands... Aim to publish a piece or more a day. I'm getting a lot out of it and having a great time!

moonbase

Something I did today. I guess you'd call it a moon base in the upper right corner. Motivated somewhat by a photo of the leftover grease from a turkey, and this:
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/091006-nightsky-lcross-impact.html

Something else I was thinking about was a sort of city in a crater of the moon and how you might see it from a shuttle or some such thing. Still work both compositionally and concept wise but this is where I ended up.

mara

Just finished this, err finished the ears so it's all in one piece. It's based off of my 3 year old daughter Mara.

update

Quick update for the character I've been working on. Took the painting into maya and with the idea of "he has 6 eyes!", tried to recreate it. for those of you that convert 2d concepts to 3d, you might see the difficulty in the initial sketch... That said I don't think I've found the sort of success I would have liked so will be exploring this more tomorrow.

castleish- sepent

remember that thing I started a while back? "castleish". You don't? You've never been here? Bummer. I started a painting and in it are a few characters. One of them is a serpent... Here's the 2d sketch

I thought it'd be fun to make a 3d model out of it. Here is some of the progress today.

I haven't decided if the things on his back will be fish fins or spikes, so that part needs to be done along with fixing the topology of the rest of his body. (it's what I colored in green. Anyway that's where it is. Hope you like.

even longer

well I've been busy what can I say... tonight just before going to bed I was asked to create a "text to smoke" effect. Got out combustion to see what I could do. 3 versions in an hour and the results?

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

ok so it's been a while

It started off well at least... I got busy with life and if I could just sit here and make stuff all day I'd be content but that just can't happen at the moment.
It's been a few weeks, so I thought Id post. it's a study of a character from a previous post. Guess which one :).

castle_chars02 & 3...

quick update on a few the characters from something I'm working on.

landscape

I spent longer than I intended but it was fun. It all started out as a quick sketch, then I got involved in trying different techniques for painting clouds. (yes I have custom cloud brushes) but when I do quick sketches I try and keep it down to a the default round brush and another where the roundness is adjusted to about 15%. Anyway I ended up screwing around in photoshop for the most part then I went in to painter to work a little more uhh "painterly"... Mostly sticking with Oils, a dry palette knife and a pen.

Some sorta dinosaur... Quick sketch,

and a duck.

Did this in my sketchbook on the way to the beach

Saturday, June 27, 2009

I have a soft spot for oil spills in the garage, no they aren't ideal but there are some interesting shapes which, when your just messing around, make for some potentially interesting things.

greenland (not the country).

Twas my daughters birthday today so I didn't get much time to do anything creative and at this point... Well I'm spent. My goal however is to post something every day. Ideally it's a quick sketch followed by something else. That didn't happen so I went back and found something I started.. (there are lots of those apparently). Liked the initial direction and figure I'll post it to keep with at least my minimum "post 1 piece a day". it started in photoshop with some standard brushes then I used some custom ones. Not sure if you can see the rock texture on the fg elements but they do exist.

this is going to take a while... What started out as guache, & india ink is turning into something I'm pretty stoked about
Some characters I'm in the process of painting for the castle scene. It ended up being too big to work with by itself so I am breaking it down into different pieces which I'll later add into the final.

castleish

Something from today... Elements were for a project I started earlier on but it went nowhere... I ended up combining the reworking the scene and voila! It is cropped, but I have big plans for those other pixels, big plans indeed.

Stopped the high resolution render for a lower rez version. Only to discover I'm not nearly as happy as I thought I would be. Oh well back to the drawing board...

toad part 3...

Worked on the toad a bit more today and and so far I'm liking it good enough. Of course, it's not as painterly as the earlier version but more accurate in terms of his perspective wise which is nice. (yeah I kinda botched that one in the drawing) no biggie it was all I needed to move on to the next phase. The render is working it's proc's off now, apparently another 23 minutes so I doubt I'll be able to show it tonight. In the meantime here's a painting I did for a book cover as I was working through some roughs. The ol' 3d & "traditional" photoshop paint over.

monday... toad continued

I kind of liked the toad idea... So I thought I'd take it a bit further. Here's it's current state Still basic but the modeling is finished at least.

a quick sketch from this evening.

quickie... the partial toad human

started as a warm-up  sketch from scratch this time... It's rough (as most of what's here is) but that's sort of the point of me doing this. Post work, don't censor and have fun. Even if it's awful. here are the results of 20-30 minutes of work.

ship concept.

Here's something I worked on a short while back...
It's a concept for an organic space ship. I started in guache & india ink then combined the results in photoshop. I also used photo reference of our thanksgiving turkey dinner. (specifically the turkey for some of it's textures.).
My wife says it looks a bit like a turd. Thanks honey...
I say a 1km turd coming at you from space is going to be intimidating no matter how you view it.
Here's a version after I messed with it a bit.

Ok so maybe it wasn't the most productive of days... I guess that happens sometimes. Well, Here's a bird.

quick sketch of a landscape.

palos

warm up sketch. Started out as 15-30 minute thing but went a bit longer. Referencing a photo I took whilst standing atop a hill somewhere in Palos Verdes.

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

refined some of the detail whilst watching "The Office" it was a repeat... It's missing the inner mouth workings though I was planning on painting that stuff anyway.

teethy

Didn't get as far as I had hoped today but the basics are in place... Now I just have to finish it.
