St. Augustine 405... site design

It's been a crazy few months. So I'll do a quick recap.
After embarking on a fun albeit challenging deadline with Patrick Ortman and GOBODY I was invited by the city of St. Augustine to submit a proposal on a website design.

How they got my name is still a mystery.

Coincidence? I'm not an infrastructure guy but just worked with someone who is. This guy also has years of experience designing websites etc. Patrick Ortman.

Long story short we had a day. One very long day to create a budget, mock-up site design and overall proposal that fit the requirements of the government standards which for me? Was totally foreign coming from primarily a creative background.

Spent the first and second part of the day creating a mock up. the third and fourth parts of the day were spent on the other requirements documentation) bed at 4am or something silly. The next morning I got up and started calculating the man-hours for the budget.

(it was due at 1pm). I sent an email to Staples with an attached .pdf at 12:00pm, took a shower and was out the door by 12:15. When I arrived at Staples they hadn't even started printing but that's fine it took me an additional 10 minutes to pick out appropriate binders, envelopes and seals to submit my 3 copies. (the girl helping me was super accommodating). I ended up arriving to the city office within 3 minutes of the deadline and submitted our documents. Here are some of the initial mock ups I did.

We didn't get the job. we scored the lowest on price but I'd say it a rewarding experience nonetheless. I appreciate their consideration and look forward to seeing the end result.

Just finished this model for Patrcick Ortman. Patrick was great to work with and I think the render turned out pretty nice.
The drink should have it's website up sometime next week. Check to see if it's live gobody!

This was from Halloween... Of last year. Done originally as an illustration for postersetc. This isn't the finished version so you don't textures on anything. The idea was to place posters on the tombstones.

Something I worked on in my spare time today. Zbrush is known for it's great sculpting but today... I really wanted to play with texturing. Nothing too complicated just used some old scans of drawings where I used india ink and guache. It's a slow buildup but I really dug it.

My desktop background. I like it, seems familiar for some reason. Maybe because I took the photos whilst flying to vegas for NAB a few years back. I think I was at discreet/autodesk at the time. Anyway I'm doing some clean up and the image was lying around so thought I"d post it.

Here are some other things I found.
This one? Don't ask it's really weird methinks but all part of the process. In fact it's one of the things have tremendous appreciation for... The process. Results are important it's just the process isn't linear. It's a great place to be.
I didn't pay attention to anything but shapes that started from ink and guache. Scanned them and this is what I ended up with.

I don't recall much of the history of this except I started painting and came up with this.

Something I did today. I guess you'd call it a moon base in the upper right corner. Motivated somewhat by a photo of the leftover grease from a turkey, and this:

Something else I was thinking about was a sort of city in a crater of the moon and how you might see it from a shuttle or some such thing. Still work both compositionally and concept wise but this is where I ended up.

Quick update for the character I've been working on. Took the painting into maya and with the idea of "he has 6 eyes!", tried to recreate it. for those of you that convert 2d concepts to 3d, you might see the difficulty in the initial sketch... That said I don't think I've found the sort of success I would have liked so will be exploring this more tomorrow.

I thought it'd be fun to make a 3d model out of it. Here is some of the progress today.

I haven't decided if the things on his back will be fish fins or spikes, so that part needs to be done along with fixing the topology of the rest of his body. (it's what I colored in green. Anyway that's where it is. Hope you like.

I spent longer than I intended but it was fun. It all started out as a quick sketch, then I got involved in trying different techniques for painting clouds. (yes I have custom cloud brushes) but when I do quick sketches I try and keep it down to a the default round brush and another where the roundness is adjusted to about 15%. Anyway I ended up screwing around in photoshop for the most part then I went in to painter to work a little more uhh "painterly"... Mostly sticking with Oils, a dry palette knife and a pen.

I have a soft spot for oil spills in the garage, no they aren't ideal but there are some interesting shapes which, when your just messing around, make for some potentially interesting things.

Twas my daughters birthday today so I didn't get much time to do anything creative and at this point... Well I'm spent. My goal however is to post something every day. Ideally it's a quick sketch followed by something else. That didn't happen so I went back and found something I started.. (there are lots of those apparently). Liked the initial direction and figure I'll post it to keep with at least my minimum "post 1 piece a day". it started in photoshop with some standard brushes then I used some custom ones. Not sure if you can see the rock texture on the fg elements but they do exist.

Worked on the toad a bit more today and and so far I'm liking it good enough. Of course, it's not as painterly as the earlier version but more accurate in terms of his perspective wise which is nice. (yeah I kinda botched that one in the drawing) no biggie it was all I needed to move on to the next phase. The render is working it's proc's off now, apparently another 23 minutes so I doubt I'll be able to show it tonight. In the meantime here's a painting I did for a book cover as I was working through some roughs. The ol' 3d & "traditional" photoshop paint over.

Here's something I worked on a short while back...

It's a concept for an organic space ship. I started in guache & india ink then combined the results in photoshop. I also used photo reference of our thanksgiving turkey dinner. (specifically the turkey for some of it's textures.).

My wife says it looks a bit like a turd. Thanks honey...

I say a 1km turd coming at you from space is going to be intimidating no matter how you view it.

Got the inspiration from a dead frog I took photos of the other day. No it didn't speak to me literally but I could get close enough to take some non-blurred macro shots. the result? Not sure but it reminded me of the show, V "the final battle"

That said I thought I might benefit from the same sort of warm up techniques... With some sorta purpose. Finally home from what I can honestly say was the best work experience I've ever had. A special thanks to Dave, Eric and the N2050 crew (Anita, Gabriel, Geronimo, Mike, Michael & Rick... ). I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my leads and sup Mathew, Joeseph, Scott, Allen and Darren. So many people to thank for both their patience and support but a few stood out since I worked with them more, oh right, Mr. John Grot as well.

My kids (aged 1, 3 and 5.) have grown in both attitude and height but it was a joy to see them nonetheless. So happy to be at home though I'll miss the days of stereoscopic comping. I showed up on the day of my sons first birthday (the 5th of June) and today my 2 girls (Aniyah and Mara) drew a sweet card for me.
